The Council of Experts is an Iranian body composed of 80 senior clerics. Its primary responsibility is the selection and supervision of the country's supreme leader, including the task of choosing a successor to the current Ayatollah.

“Israeli and Iranian officials alike have reported the assembly building where members would meet to elect a new Supreme Leader has been struck and severely damaged. The message Israel is sending with this strike is clear. They do not intend to allow the appointment of a new Ayatollah.”

“Candidates running for the Assembly of Experts are screened by the Guardian Council. Before elections, this council has both veto and approval powers. It also supervises the elections themselves and vetos any laws it considers contrary to Islam or the Constitution.”

“On Sunday, March 8th, the Assembly of Experts announced that it had chosen Machaba Kame, the son of the slain Ayatollah, as Iran's new supreme leader.”

“It is his son, newly elected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts.”
